Fiber Optic cable damaged once again by another ‘ship’ anchor – Interrupts all of the East African Coast internet access

“A ship anchoring in a restricted area disrupted an East African high-speed Internet connection. The damaged fiber optic cable is one of three new undersea cables in the area off Kenyan coast. Repairs could take up to 14 days. ‘The Teams cable had been rerouting data from three other cables severed 10 days ago in the Red Sea between Djibouti and the Middle East. Together, the four fiber-optic cables channel thousands of gigabytes of information per second and form the backbone of East Africa’s telecom infrastructure. Telecom companies were reeling over the weekend as engineers attempted to reroute data south along the East African coast and around the Cape of Good Hope.’”

Me: You guys want us to believe that this keeps happening by accident?  It just keeps on happening over and over again. Why is there no security/military out there protecting this expensive fiber optic cable?

Flatworms Defy Ageing – Immortality

“Researchers from The University of Nottingham have demonstrated how a species of flatworm overcomes the ageing process to be potentially immortal. The discovery, published (abstract; full text PDF) in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, is part of a project funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and Medical Research Council and may shed light on the possibilities of alleviating ageing and age-related characteristics in human cells.”

After finding the gene for telomerase synthesis in the worms, the researchers were able to observe that the worms “…dramatically increase the activity of this gene when they regenerate, allowing stem cells to maintain their telomeres as they divide to replace missing tissues.”

Me: Now we simply have to turn this into a pill that only the super rich and celebrities can afford and they will be immortal!  Sort of like that movie Time with Justin Timberlake.

ACTA controvery continues – Bulgaria joins Poland, Germany and the Netherlands

“The government of Bulgaria, which had already signed ACTA, yesterday reversed itself, and announced that it would not seek ratification of the treaty. This comes after similar moves by Poland, Germany and the Netherlands, and a weekend of massive protests against ACTA across the European continent.”

Le Me: Awesome Sauce! More countries need to join Poland, Germany and the Netherlands. This is by far one of the most damaging laws bought forth by the RIAA/MPAA lobbyists. In the U.S. the motto should be changed from “By the people for the people” to “By the corporations forced on the people”

All users tracked via cell phones – Government requires real-time details of users’ locations in latitude and longitude

“As per amendments made to operators’ licences, beginning May 31, operators would have to provide the Department of Telecommunications real-time details of users’ locations in latitudes and longitudes. Documents obtained by The Indian Express show that details shall initially be provided for mobile numbers specified by the government. Within three years, service providers will have to provide information on locations of all users. The information will have some margin of error at first. But by 2013, at least 60 per cent of the calls in urban areas would have to be accurately tracked when made 100 metres away from the nearest cell tower. By 2014, the government will seek to increase the proportion to 75 per cent in cities and 50 per cent in suburban and rural areas.”

Le Me: I already suspect that the U.S. government has been doing this for at least 3 years.  At least, they get a notification over there. lol!

Best video game ending is… “Black Ops” ??!? Whaaa!??

The famous Guinness Book of World Records recently conducted some research to determine the top 50 video game endings of all time. On the list were games such as Portal 2, Kingdom Hearts, and “Half-Life: Episode Two“, none of which topped the chart. We’re all used to seeing Gamespot and IGN coming up with lists like this that survey hundreds of thousands of people online over the course of a month or more, but Guinness released this list after tallying the votes of just 13,519 “fans of gaming”. Guinness is well known and regarded as the official source on many world statistics, but did they devote enough time and effort into this list to get an accurate idea of how gamers really feel?
Link to Original Source

Le Me: Apparently 13,519 fans are all you need as confirmation. Just how many players actually played Black Ops? “Over 20 million Call of Duty: Black Ops players have logged more than 600 million man-hours with the game in the 45 days since its November 9 release, Activision has revealed.”  200,000 people is roughly 1% of the total number of Black Ops players… That makes 13,519 = 6.75% of the 1% of total Black Ops players.  In other words, they tallied the equivalent of 0.06% of the Black Ops user base. This is just unprofessional!

AT&T trying to justify charging users more money for data

http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Guardian/Pix/pictures/2007/06/29/iphone128f.jpg“In an effort to justify its policies surrounding data service throttling for subscribers with unlimited smartphone data plans, AT&T on Tuesday issued a brief report regarding data usage on its nationwide wireless network. Senior EVP of AT&T technology and network operations John Donovan wrote on a company blog that data traffic on AT&T’s network has grown a staggering 20,000% over the past five years. Usage has doubled between 2010 and 2011 according to the executive, due in large part to the proliferation of smartphones. AT&T sold more smartphones in the fourth quarter of 2011 than in any other quarter in its history. And because its smartphone subscribers use so much data, AT&T seems to suggest it has no choice but to put measures such as data throttling in place

Me: This is unbelievable. The iPhone has been around for exactly 5 years!  “The iPhone went on sale in the United States on June 29, 2007“.  What would be nice to see is a comparison of their user base growth to the data usage growth.

Let’s not forget that after AT&T was denied their merger with T-Mobile (which would have given them an easy excuse to raise their prices [less competition]), they have been desperately seeking to raise prices (translation: increase profitability).

How little exercise you actually need

Millions of Americans don’t engage in much exercise, if they complete any at all and asked why, a majority of respondents, in survey after survey, say, ‘I don’t have time.’ Now Gretchen Reynolds reports that instead of wondering just how much exercise people really need in order to gain health and fitness, a group of scientists in Canada are turning that issue on its head and asking, how little exercise do we need to maintain fitness and the answer appears to be, a lot less than most of us think — provided we’re willing to work a bit. Most people have heard of intervals, or repeated, short, sharp bursts of strenuous activity, interspersed with rest periods. Almost all competitive athletes strategically employ a session or two of interval training every week to improve their speed and endurance. Researchers have developed a version of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) that involves one minute of strenuous effort, at about 90 percent of a person’s maximum heart rate (which most of us can estimate, very roughly, by subtracting our age from 220), followed by one minute of easy recovery. The effort and recovery are repeated 10 times, for a total of 20 minutes and the interval training is performed twice a week. Despite the small time commitment of this modified HIIT program, after several weeks of practicing it, both the unfit volunteers and the cardiac patients showed significant improvements in their health and fitness. ‘A growing body of evidence demonstrates that high-intensity interval training can serve as an effective alternate to traditional endurance-based training, inducing similar or even superior physiological adaptations in healthy individuals and diseased populations, at least when compared on a matched-work basis.
